Why Minecraft 1.22 Never Came and the Real Version That Did

Minecraft 1.22 never shipped. Mojang’s Mounts of Mayhem drop arrived as Java 1.21.11 on 9 Dec 2025, and the next Java line started at 26.1. Here’s why.

Minecraft 1.22 does not exist because Mojang replaced 1.x version numbers with year-based 26.x numbering

๐Ÿ“Œ Quick answer: There is no Minecraft 1.22. In December 2025 Mojang switched both editions to year-based version numbers. After Java 1.21.11 (Mounts of Mayhem), the next Java release was 26.1, the first game drop of 2026 (Bedrock 26.10). Any “1.22” download or leak is not from Mojang.

There is no Minecraft 1.22, and none is planned

Minecraft 1.22 was never released, and Mojang’s current numbering no longer leads to it. The update people expected as 1.22 shipped as Java 26.1 instead.

Which situation are you in?

  • Running mods or a server labelled 1.21? Jump to the mods and servers section.
  • Found a “1.22” download? Go straight to the fake-downloads section.

Why Mojang skipped 1.22

Minecraft 1.22 version numbering comparison showing the old 1.21.x format and the new year-based 26.x system
Mojang did not release Minecraft 1.22 because it changed its version-numbering system: 2026 releases now begin with 26.

Mojang dropped 1.x numbering because game drops kept piling up under 1.21.

โœ… Confirmed: Mojang’s 2 Dec 2025 article says versions released in 2026 start with “26” on both Java and Bedrock, followed by a release number and then a patch or hotfix number.

The 1.21 problem

1.21 was the Tricky Trials update in June 2024. Mojang then moved to several smaller game drops a year, and those kept the 1.21 label. The Garden Awakens, for example, shipped as Java 1.21.4 and Bedrock 1.21.50, which Mojang itself says made major updates hard to tell apart from fixes.

What the year number fixes

The first number is now the year, so 26.x means 2026. Mojang also wanted players to be able to name an upcoming drop by its number before it gets a title, which is the job “1.22” used to do. The full details are in Mojang’s announcement of the new version numbers.

What came after 1.21.11

The last old-style Java version was 1.21.11, and the next one was 26.1.

๐Ÿ”Ž Unconfirmed โ€” Reported: The 1.21.11 date and its “final old-format version” status come from the Minecraft Wiki’s Java Edition 1.21.11 page. The 26.1/26.10 Tiny Takeover pairing also comes from the Minecraft Wiki, read 15 Oct 2026. If Mojang’s own changelogs differ, they take priority.

โœ… Confirmed: Mojang’s Bedrock 26.50 changelog (15 Sep 2026) writes Bedrock versions in the “1.26.50” form for creator content.

Where to find the current version

The current Java and Bedrock numbers change with every drop and hotfix. We keep them dated in the Java and Bedrock version map for each 2026 drop.

Is a big “1.22-style” update still coming?

Big features now arrive in game drops spread across the year, not one numbered mega-update.

How updates arrive now

โœ… Confirmed: Mojang’s game drops timeline page says new features release “several times a year” in drops.

The page lists 2025’s drops as Spring to Life, Chase the Skies, The Copper Age and Mounts of Mayhem. See the Minecraft game drops timeline.

Ignore “1.22 leaks”

๐Ÿ”Ž Unconfirmed โ€” Rumour: “1.22 leak” videos and fan-wiki pages for “1.22” updates rank in search (seen 15 Oct 2026). None are from Mojang, and fan wikis are fiction by design. If you want to know what comes next, follow the next drop by its 26.x number instead: tracking the 26.4 snapshots.

What the skip means for mods and servers

If something is labelled 1.21, it was built for the old line, not for 26.x.

Mods

Mods are built for one Minecraft version. A mod marked 1.21 is not a 26.x build. Check whether 1.21 mods run on 26.x before you move a modded world forward.

Servers and Java

The 26.x line also changed which Java runtime manual installs and server JARs need. Because that requirement can change again, we keep it current on the Java version Minecraft mods need.

Which number your game uses

Both Java and Bedrock now use the 26.x format, but the numbers after “26” differ by edition.

Java vs Bedrock numbers

Java counts drops as 26.1, 26.2 and so on. Bedrock’s release numbers climb faster, which is why the same drop has two numbers. Mojang says the gap comes from platform limits and Bedrock’s more frequent releases.

Staying current

โœ… Confirmed: Mojang’s 2 Dec 2025 article says Minecraft prompts you to update to the latest version by default on both editions.

Fake “Minecraft 1.22” downloads

Any file sold or shared as Minecraft 1.22 is not an official version.

Why these pages exist

โš ๏ธ Watch out: A page offering a free “Minecraft 1.22” Android download ranked second on Google for “minecraft 1.22” on 15 Oct 2026. Unofficial game files can carry malware or account-stealing code. Parents: check where a child’s download came from.

The safe route

Get Minecraft and its updates only from the Minecraft Launcher, your console’s or phone’s store, or Mojang’s download page. For mods, use the hosts listed in where to get Minecraft files safely.

Minecraft 1.22 questions, answered

1. Is there a Minecraft 1.22?

No. Minecraft 1.22 was never released, because Mojang switched to year-based numbers starting with 26 in 2026.

2. What version replaced Minecraft 1.22?

Java 26.1, the Tiny Takeover drop, took the place Minecraft 1.22 would have had, alongside Bedrock 26.10.

3. Why did Minecraft skip 1.22?

Game drops kept stacking under 1.21, so Mojang made the year the first number instead of moving Minecraft to 1.22.

4. What was the last 1.21 version of Minecraft?

Java 1.21.11, Mounts of Mayhem, from December 2025, was the last old-format version before Minecraft 1.22 would have come.

5. What does 26 mean in Minecraft version numbers?

The 26 is the year, 2026. It replaced the 1.x prefix that would have produced Minecraft 1.22.

6. When is the Minecraft 1.22 release date?

There is no Minecraft 1.22 release date. Track the next drop by its 26.x number, such as 26.4, instead.

7. Are Minecraft 1.22 leaks real?

No. Minecraft 1.22 leak videos and fan-wiki pages are not from Mojang, which has retired 1.x numbering altogether.

8. Do 1.21 mods work in Minecraft 26.x?

Not as a rule. Minecraft mods are built per version, so a 1.21 build is not a 26.x build.

9. Why does Bedrock show 1.26.50 instead of 1.22?

1.26.50 is the technical form of Bedrock 26.50. It has nothing to do with the cancelled Minecraft 1.22 numbering.

10. Is a free Minecraft 1.22 APK safe?

No. No official Minecraft 1.22 exists, so these files aren’t from Mojang. Next step: update only through the official launcher or your store.

What to do now

Stop waiting for Minecraft 1.22. Read any 26.x number as the year plus a drop or hotfix, and check the dated version map when you need today’s numbers. Install nothing labelled “1.22”.
