A preview build sits under OptiFine’s separate “Preview versions” link, and its file name starts with “preview_”. A full release has no prefix.

What the 26.x changelogs say

The K2 pre3 changelog (15 October 2026) ends with “not compatible with Forge,” and the 26.1.2 K1 pre2 entry says the same. Neither entry mentions Fabric or NeoForge support.

The last Forge-compatible OptiFine build

The newest OptiFine build that names a Forge version is 1.21.11 HD U J9 (5 February 2026), listed as compatible with Forge 61.0.8. Forge itself has 26.3 builds; the current one is in the loader table linked above.

Across recent versions, OptiFine’s first build has appeared 43 to 98 days after Mojang’s release, and no 26.x version has a full release yet.

Past gaps are not a forecast. Mojang published its 26.3 release notes on 15 September 2026, and OptiFine has given no 26.3 date since.

Why there’s no OptiFine for 26.1

OptiFine’s downloads page jumps from 1.21.11 to 26.1.2, with no builds for 26.1 or 26.1.1. OptiFine hasn’t given a reason.

Some pages say OptiFine 26.1.2 came out in April 2026. That’s Minecraft 26.1.2’s release date (9 April); OptiFine’s first 26.1.2 build is a 9 June preview.

Shaders on 26.3 without OptiFine: what exists now

If you want shaders on 26.3 today, the confirmed route is Iris, not OptiFine.

Iris and your OptiFine shader packs

Iris’s Modrinth page describes it as a shader loader intended to work with existing OptiFine shader packs, and lists 26.3 (checked 16 October 2026). It says almost all packs work and lists the ones that don’t.

“OptiFine for Fabric” is not OptiFine

OptiFine for Fabric is a separate Modrinth modpack recreating OptiFine-style features with Sodium, Iris and Lithium; its 26.3 build is labelled alpha. OptiFine’s developer doesn’t make it, and we haven’t tested it.

Can you play 26.2 to use the OptiFine preview?

Yes, if you play Minecraft 26.2 instead; OptiFine’s 26.2 previews are built for 26.2.

Why a 26.2 build isn’t a 26.3 build

OptiFine publishes a separate build for each Minecraft version, and its K2 changelog says “updated to 26.2.” Nothing on OptiFine’s site says a 26.2 build supports 26.3.

Protect your 26.3 worlds first

1. Copy your world folder first, then open only the copy in 26.2.
2. In the Minecraft Launcher’s Installations tab, add release 26.2 (per the community Minecraft Wiki).
3. On OptiFine’s downloads page, open “Preview versions” under 26.2 and use “(Mirror)”, which stays on optifine.net; “Download” routes through an ad link.

• SDL3 impact: unconfirmed. Minecraft 26.3 swapped GLFW for SDL3; OptiFine hasn’t said whether that affects its port.
