Are There Minecraft Ice Caves Seeds Yet? The Current Answer
Ice cave seeds start with one confirmed fact: Mojang added the biome to a Java snapshot and a Bedrock Preview. Here is what that means for your world.

Table of Contents
π Quick answer: Ice caves exist only in testing builds so far: Java 26.4 Snapshot 3 (October 6, 2026) and Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 with the Drop 4 of 2026 experiment on. Mojang says they can generate under colder biomes. We found no seed list checked on either build, so treat “ice cave seeds” as unverified; test your own seed instead.
π Verified against: Minecraft Java 26.4 Snapshot 3 and Bedrock Preview 26.60.29, checked October 8, 2026 Β· Stability: Volatile.
Do Minecraft seeds have ice caves yet?
We found no verified ice cave seed. Ice caves are in testing builds only.
π Why it happens: A seed is only an input to a build’s world generator, so a list made for an older build cannot contain a biome that build never had.
The stable releases lack them too; the current Java and Bedrock release numbers sit in the pillar’s version map.
If you want a seed to paste

If you want to test ice caves now
Start with the build table in section 2, then the steps in section 6.
If you play the stable release
Sections 2 and 4 cover availability and your existing world.
Which Minecraft builds have ice caves right now?
Ice caves are in two testing builds. Table as of October 8, 2026; “added” means first appeared.
| Edition | Build | Added | Key detail | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Java | 26.4 Snapshot 3 | Oct 6, 2026 | Launcher snapshot | CONFIRMED |
| Bedrock | Preview 26.60.29 | Sept 30, 2026 | Drop 4 of 2026 experiment | CONFIRMED |

Java: the 26.4 snapshots
Mojang’s 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes list the Ice Caves biome under New Features, so guides calling it Bedrock-only predate October 6.
Bedrock: Preview with the Drop 4 experiment
The Preview 26.60.29 changelog files it under Experimental Features.
Release date and final version numbers
Mojang gives no release date, though it calls this the final game drop of 2026.
π Unconfirmed β Reported: The community-run Minecraft Wiki lists Java 26.4 and Bedrock 26.60 as planned releases (read October 8, 2026). Mojang gives no numbers.
Where ice caves generate: confirmed vs reported
Mojang’s Java notes say the Ice Cave “can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld”; the Bedrock changelog says ice caves “appear under biomes with low temperature.” Anything stricter is not Mojang’s. As of Snapshot 3 and Preview 26.60.29.

| Claim | Tier | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Can generate under colder biomes (Java); low-temperature biomes (Bedrock) | CONFIRMED | Mojang, both build pages |
| Built mainly of packed ice and calcite | CONFIRMED | Mojang, same pages |
| Usually below snowy biomes, sometimes below taigas, at very high “weirdness” values | REPORTED | Minecraft Wiki (community-run) |
| Considerably rare | REPORTED | Insider Gaming, Sept 26 |
| Y level, frequency figure | UNKNOWN | Not in Mojang’s written notes |
What Mojang’s notes say
Climate wording and block makeup only.
What the wiki and outlets add
The community-run Minecraft Wiki’s Ice Caves entry reports a stricter placement rule. Insider Gaming’s Minecraft Live recap calls them considerably rare. A September 27 BisectHosting guide says “exclusively beneath snowy biomes”; Mojang’s wording is broader.
What nobody has published
Any Y level or frequency number is unsourced.
Will your existing seed or world get ice caves?
Mojang’s notes do not say. They never mention seeds, existing worlds or chunks (checked October 8, 2026).
Explored chunks and new chunks
π Unconfirmed β Reported: Space-Node’s September 26 guide says the biome “only appears in new chunks.” No Mojang source backs it; if wrong, upgraded terrain could change.
The pillar keeps the general rule: how explored and unexplored chunks behave after an update. The last new biome raised the same question: what the dappled forest changed for old seeds.
A new world on an old seed
β Confirmed: Mojang’s Snapshot 3 technical notes (October 6, 2026) add a world-generation noise named
ice_cave_gradient. Mojang does not say what it changes for existing seeds.
Upgrading an old world
Nothing we found says an upgraded world gains ice caves.
Why ice cave seed lists can’t be verified yet
We found no seed list checked on a build that has ice caves. The biome first appeared on September 30 (Bedrock Preview) and October 6 (Java snapshot), so a list tagged for earlier builds cannot hold one.
Lists tagged for builds without ice caves
One WiseHosting page, “Lush caves and cliffs on ice,” is tagged Java 1.20 to 1.21.11. Its “ice” is a snowy surface; it describes lush caves.
A snowy surface is not enough
Mojang says ice caves “can” generate under colder biomes, not that they will. The community-run wiki reports they tend to need very high weirdness values (REPORTED), so snow alone proves nothing.
Seed maps: no support verified
We found no seed map documenting ice cave support (searched October 8, 2026). The site tested no seed.
How to test your own seed for ice caves
Find your seed first with the pillar’s seed-check steps.
Step 1: back up and use a separate folder
π§ Try this: Copy your world, then run the test build in a different folder. Mojang warns testing versions can corrupt worlds.
Step 2: install the Java snapshot or Bedrock Preview
- Java: enable snapshots in the Launcher’s Installations tab; run 26.4 Snapshot 3.
- Bedrock: use Preview (Xbox, Windows, iOS) or the Android beta; turn on the Drop 4 of 2026 experiment.
π Unconfirmed β Reported: Gamertag Mythras (October 2) says a Bedrock experiment cannot be turned off once a world exists, so treat a test world as one-way.
Step 3: locate and compare
Open your seed with commands enabled and try /locate biome. Mojang’s notes publish no ice cave biome ID.
If nothing shows up
π Unconfirmed β Reported: Insider Gaming calls ice caves considerably rare and Space-Node says they appear only in new chunks.
We did not run these steps.
Edge cases: changing snapshots, mods and downloads
Snapshots change weekly
Snapshots are testing builds, so this page can change before release. Snapshots 1 to 3 arrived between September 22 and October 6.
Mods, data packs and servers
We have not sourced how modded worlds, data packs, Realms or servers handle ice caves.
Seed-finder downloads
A seed map needs a seed, not a download. Read before you download a seed finder.
Minecraft ice caves and seeds, answered
1. Do Minecraft seeds have ice caves?
Only testing builds have ice caves, and we found no seed list checked on them, so test your own seed in those builds.
2. Which Minecraft version has ice caves?
Ice caves are in Java 26.4 Snapshot 3 (October 6, 2026) and Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 with the Drop 4 of 2026 experiment on.
3. Are ice caves in Java and Bedrock?
Both, in testing only: a Java snapshot and a Bedrock Preview experiment. Neither stable release has ice caves.
4. Where do ice caves generate in Minecraft?
Mojang says ice caves can generate under colder biomes; the community-run wiki reports they usually sit below snowy biomes.
5. How rare are ice caves?
Insider Gaming’s Minecraft Live recap calls ice caves considerably rare; Mojang’s written notes give no frequency figure.
6. Will ice caves generate in my existing world?
Mojang’s notes do not say. Space-Node reports ice caves only appear in new chunks, which is unconfirmed.
7. Is there an ice caves seed?
We found no verified one; seed lists tagged for builds without ice caves cannot contain the biome.
8. How do I find ice caves with /locate?
Run /locate biome with commands enabled in a test build; Mojang’s notes publish no ice cave ID, so we cannot confirm one.
9. When do ice caves come out?
Mojang has given no release date for ice caves, though it calls Drop 4 the final game drop of 2026.
10. Is it safe to test ice caves on my main world?
No. Mojang warns testing versions can corrupt worlds, so test ice caves on a backup copy in a separate folder.
What to do with your seed until ice caves ship
Ice caves are confirmed in testing builds only, and no ice cave seed list has been verified. Until that changes:
- Back up your world.
- Test your own seed in the right build.
- Check back after the next snapshot.
