Official PS5 and Xbox Fixes When Your GTA 6 Preload Stalls

📌 Quick answer: GTA 6 preload can’t start before November 12, 2026. It opens at local midnight that day for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, per Rockstar Support. If it still won’t start after that, confirm you’re signed in to the account that pre-ordered, turn on automatic downloads, and check your game library.

🕒 Verified against: Grand Theft Auto VI pre-release (no game version yet); Rockstar Support “Platforms, Editions, and Versions,” last updated August 18, 2026, checked September 29, 2026 · Stability: Volatile.

Why your GTA 6 preload hasn’t started yet

If it’s before November 12, 2026, nothing is broken: the GTA 6 preload window isn’t open yet. Rockstar opens it at local midnight that day for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Before November 12: nothing is wrong

On PS5, a pre-order sits in your Game Library with a countdown timer until content becomes available. Setting up your console now saves you a stalled download later.

After November 12: find your fix below

• PS5, nothing downloading: jump to the PS5 fixes.
• Xbox, nothing downloading: jump to the Xbox fixes. Power mode is the first thing to check.
• You bought the boxed copy: your preload runs on a code, so see the physical-copy section.
• The download stopped for space: see the storage section.

How GTA 6 preloading works

GTA 6 preloading starts on November 12, 2026, at local midnight, for digital pre-orders on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

✅ Confirmed: Rockstar Support states that pre-load begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026, and that codes redeemed before launch begin pre-loading that day. Source: Rockstar’s official GTA VI platforms, editions, and pre-load page, last updated August 18, 2026.

Start time: local midnight, November 12

“Local midnight” follows your own region’s clock, so the start rolls out time zone by time zone. We keep the converted start time in our guide to the exact GTA 6 preload time in India (IST). November 12 and November 19, 2026 are both Thursdays; some guides list them as a Monday and a Wednesday.

You can’t play until launch

A preload only downloads the game. Grand Theft Auto VI stays locked until November 19, 2026, the launch date Rockstar Support lists.

PS5 preload not starting: the fixes

Start here: turn on automatic downloads, then make sure your pre-order is ticked for auto-download.

Turn on automatic downloads

🔧 Try this: Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and turn on Auto-Download.

Let it download in rest mode

🔧 Try this: Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.

🔍 Why it happens: A PS5 in rest mode only downloads while it stays connected to the internet. With that setting off, the preload waits until you switch the console on.

Check the pre-order in your Game Library

🔧 Try this: Open Game Library, select GTA VI, then select the countdown timer. Make sure each content box is ticked, then select OK.

These paths come from PlayStation’s guide to auto-downloading a pre-order and its automatic downloads and rest mode settings.

Xbox preload not starting: the fixes

Start here: check your Xbox power mode, because Xbox made Shutdown (energy saving) the default in 2023.

Check your power mode (Sleep vs Shutdown)

🔧 Try this: Go to Settings > General > Power options and choose Sleep for preload week. Switch back to Shutdown (energy saving) once the download finishes.

✅ Confirmed: Xbox Wire’s announcement of Shutdown (energy saving) as the default (January 11, 2023) confirms the default and the Power options path. Xbox Support’s page on Xbox power options covers both modes.

🔎 Unconfirmed — Reported: Reports disagree on whether full game downloads continue in Shutdown mode. KnowTechie (November 2024) says they don’t, while Tom’s Guide says updates still download. Tom’s Guide also reports that Sleep was previously called “Instant On,” the name some GTA 6 guides still use. If Xbox confirms Shutdown handles preloads, the switch to Sleep becomes optional.

Find it in your queue

🔧 Try this: Open My games & apps, select Manage, then Queue. If GTA VI is paused, resume it.

Physical copy won’t preload? Check your code

The boxed GTA 6 physical edition has no disc. It holds a download code, and the preload starts only after you redeem it.

There’s no disc in the box

✅ Confirmed: Rockstar Support says the physical version contains a download code, not a disc. It is expected at retailers from November 12, and codes can be used as soon as they arrive. Source: Rockstar Support, last updated August 18, 2026.

A late shipment means a later code, and so a later preload. Redemption steps are in our breakdown of what’s actually inside the GTA 6 box.

PlayStation codes are region-locked; Xbox codes aren’t

Per Rockstar Support, PlayStation codes redeem only on accounts in the matching region group, while Xbox codes are not region-locked. If a PS5 code won’t redeem, check our list of region-locked GTA 6 PS5 codes.

⚠️ Watch out: Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in your platform account’s country. Avoid key-reseller sites. A wrong-region code won’t redeem, and a code that won’t redeem can’t start a preload.

Not enough space? The size isn’t announced yet

Rockstar hasn’t published an official GTA 6 install size, so any exact figure you’ve seen is an estimate or a rumour.

What’s confirmed

Update block, as of September 29, 2026: Rockstar’s support page covers platforms, editions, and preload timing but lists no file size. Because no copy includes a disc, every copy is a full download.

What’s rumour

🔎 Unconfirmed — Reported / Rumour: GamesRadar (August 28, 2026) estimated at least 120–130GB, possibly more. That is an outlet estimate, not a Rockstar figure. The viral “676.7GB” claim is false: an X community note says the screenshot showed an Xbox One listing, and the store uses a placeholder size.

When the preload still won’t start

If your settings are right and the window is open, the blocker is usually the account or the order itself.

Wrong account or a cancelled pre-order

A pre-order appears only on the account that bought it, so sign in with that account. A cancelled or refunded pre-order won’t preload; if you’re weighing a cancellation, first read how cancelling a GTA 6 pre-order works.

When to contact Rockstar or your platform

Store and download problems go to PlayStation or Xbox support, because the order lives in their store. Rockstar Support says it is available 24/7 through its request form.
