How GTA 6 Is Region Locked on PS5, Country by Country
GTA 6’s PS5 region lock works by group, not country: an Indian account can redeem codes bought in Australia or Germany, but not the US or Singapore.

Will a GTA 6 code from another country work on your PS5?
On PS5, a code only works if it comes from the same region group as your PlayStation account. On Xbox, it works anywhere.
✅ Confirmed: Rockstar’s support page states that PlayStation codes can only be redeemed by accounts registered in the matching set of countries, and that Xbox codes are not region-locked. (Rockstar Support, updated 18 August 2026.)
Boxed copies hold a code, not a disc
Every retail copy of GTA 6 ships with a download code instead of a disc. The code is the entire purchase, so a box whose code won’t redeem is worth nothing to you. Why PS5 codes are locked and Xbox codes aren’t
The lock comes from how PlayStation accounts work. Rockstar didn’t design a rule just for this game.
Your PSN account’s country is permanent
Every PSN account is tied to one country or region, chosen when the account was created. PlayStation’s own support page says that choice can’t be changed after the account is created. The same page says voucher codes must match the account’s country or region to activate.
🔍 Why it happens: A PS5 code is not a worldwide licence for the game. It’s a voucher for one regional PlayStation Store. Your account can only open its own store, so a code issued for a different store has nowhere to land.
Xbox codes redeem anywhere
Rockstar confirms that Xbox Series X|S codes are not region-locked. A code bought in any country redeems on any Xbox account.
Which countries share a GTA 6 PS5 code region
Rockstar sorts PS5 codes into nine region groups. A code redeems on any account registered in a country inside the same group.

Surprises in the list
- UK and Ireland are split. A UK code won’t redeem on an Irish account, and an Irish code won’t redeem on a UK account.
- India sits with Europe and Australia. It is not grouped with Southeast Asia.
- Brazil is not in LATAM. Brazilian and Mexican codes don’t cross.
Buying GTA 6 for a PS5 in India or Southeast Asia
India and Southeast Asia sit in different groups. That changes which imports are safe.
Indian accounts: which imports can work
An Indian PSN account belongs to Rest of EMEA and Asia. That means a boxed code bought in Australia, Germany, France, Ireland or any other country in that group can redeem. Codes from the US, UK, Singapore or the UAE can’t.

Singapore, Malaysia and the rest of SEA
Codes move freely between Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, but not to India. The Philippines and Vietnam don’t appear on Rockstar’s list at all Rockstar says the game will reach more countries as platform policies, regulations and age ratings allow.
⚠️ Watch out: A cheaper foreign box only saves you money if its group matches your account’s group. Rockstar recommends buying from a retailer in your account’s own country to avoid activation problems.
What’s confirmed, what’s reported, and what’s wrong
Several widely shared versions of these rules don’t match Rockstar’s page.
The Japan code expiry date
✅ Confirmed: Rockstar says Japanese product codes expire 170 days after issuance, which it defines as the 19 November 2026 launch date, due to regional regulations. (Rockstar Support, updated 18 August 2026.) By our count, that is around 8 May 2027.
🔎 Unconfirmed — Reported: Tech2 (29 July 2026) gave the expiry as 12 January 2027, which is 54 days after launch, not 170. Playfront.de (28 July 2026) reported that the expiry covers only bonuses and add-ons, not the game itself. Rockstar’s wording makes no such distinction. If Playfront’s reading is correct, the base game code would not expire.
Claims that don’t match Rockstar’s list
- “The code must match the country of purchase” (Notebookcheck): the rule is the region group, not the exact country.
- Upcomer’s groupings: it placed the UK in a Europe group and South Korea and the Philippines in an Asia group. Rockstar gives the UK and Korea their own groups and doesn’t list the Philippines.
- “Buy only in your own country”: this is Rockstar’s recommendation, not the rule itself.
How to check before you buy a boxed code
Two minutes of checking prevents a wasted purchase.
Confirm your account’s country
- Sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Select Your Information, then Residential Address.
- Your country or region is shown at the bottom. Find it in the table above.
Confirm the retailer’s country, or buy digital
Match the retailer’s country to the same group. If the listing doesn’t say where the code is from, ask the seller before paying.
🛒 Where to get it: Buying digitally from the PlayStation Store on your own account avoids the code-matching problem, because the purchase happens inside your account’s own store.
⚠️ Watch out: Marketplace listings selling “global” GTA 6 PS5 codes can’t override Sony’s regional lock. If the seller can’t name the code’s region, don’t buy it.
Bought the wrong region? What your options are
Act before you try to redeem, because an unused code is your strongest position.
Return it to the retailer before redeeming
Contact the retailer first. Rockstar’s standing guidance for region-restricted codes is to go back to where you bought them. If your country isn’t on Rockstar’s list
Rockstar’s pre-order details page says more countries will be added as platform policies, regulations and age ratings allow. Some players reportedly create a second account in a matching region. That cuts the game off from their main profile, trophies and friends list, and PlayStation asks that an account’s country match your residence and billing details.
🔎 Unconfirmed — Reported: Tech2 (29 July 2026) and Wccftech (29 July 2026) report that making an account in another region breaks PlayStation’s terms and risks a ban. We haven’t verified this against PSN’s terms text.
