GTA 6 Age Rating Status and Exact PS5 and Xbox Blocking Steps
GTA 6’s age rating isn’t final yet β PlayStation’s official page says so. Here’s each board’s status and the steps to block it on PS5 or Xbox.

Table of Contents
π Quick answer: GTA 6’s ESRB Mature 17+ rating is reported, not final. A Sony marketing email showed it, but PlayStation’s own GTA VI page still lists age ratings as unconfirmed. Plan for M 17+ / PEGI 18. To block it now, set your child’s age level in PS5 Family Management or turn on content restrictions in Xbox Family Settings.
π Verified against: Grand Theft Auto VI pre-release rating status (no final board rating published), checked 28 September 2026 Β· Stability: Volatile.
What GTA 6 is rated right now, and what’s official
GTA 6 has no final board rating yet, but every signal points to ESRB Mature 17+. Checking the rating? Read on. Setting up a console? Jump to the PS5 steps in Section 4 or the Xbox steps in Section 5.
Reported vs final: the one-line answer
β Confirmed: Sony’s official Grand Theft Auto VI page on PlayStation.com states the game’s age ratings are unconfirmed at the time of writing. It notes that GTA V was rated M 17+ by the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe. Checked 28 September 2026.
π Unconfirmed β Reported: In May 2026, a PlayStation marketing email showed GTA 6 with an ESRB M 17+ logo and content descriptors, as reported by WikiGTAVI and GameGPU. Rockstar’s own site still read “Rating Pending” at the time. If the final rating differs, Sections 2 and 3 change; the console steps do not.
Where to go next
Treat GTA 6 as M 17+ / PEGI 18 for planning, but don’t quote it as final until the ESRB and PEGI databases list it. For country-by-country status, see Section 2. To stop purchases, see Section 6.
βΉοΈ Before you continue: This page covers an adult-rated game and spending on a child’s account. It explains ratings and official console controls. It isn’t parenting or legal advice, and rules on selling rated games to minors vary by country.
GTA 6 rating status by board: ESRB, PEGI and others

This table is our single source of truth for GTA 6’s rating status. Every row is rechecked weekly until launch.
| Board / region | Status (checked 28 Sep 2026) | Tier | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESRB (US, Canada) | M 17+ reported; no final ESRB entry found | Reported | Rockstar and Sony pages don’t list a final rating |
| PEGI (UK, Europe) | Provisional 18 badge reported on PlayStation UK | Reported | Provisional ratings can change before release |
| Australia | MA15+ listing circulated in 2023 | Rumour | Disputed; likely a placeholder |
| India | No statutory games board | Reported | Storefronts show IARC-derived ratings |
Version note: pre-release status. It is replaced in full when each board publishes.
US (ESRB) and Europe (PEGI)
In the US, the ESRB is self-regulatory. Major retailers restrict M-rated sales to under-17s through voluntary store policies agreed with the ESRB, not by federal law.
π Unconfirmed β Reported: Halo reported on 30 August 2026 that neither the ESRB nor the PEGI database had a GTA VI entry. It also reported that PlayStation UK shows a provisional PEGI 18 generated from the publisher’s own questionnaire. Halo notes that PEGI 12, 16 and 18 are legally enforceable at sale in the UK.
Australia, India and other regions
Some parent guides present Australia’s MA15+ as settled. It isn’t.
π Unconfirmed β Rumour: The 2023 MA15+ listing lacked the publisher details shown on Rockstar’s other Australian rating pages, Sportskeeda reported, and was judged likely a placeholder. GTA V was rated 18+ in Australia, so a final MA15+ would be a surprise.
What the M rating and content descriptors mean for parents

Content descriptors tell you why a game earned its rating. For GTA 6 they are reported, not yet published by the ESRB.
The reported descriptors
| Descriptor | GTA V (ESRB, published) | GTA 6 (reported, May 2026) | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood and Gore | β | β | Matches |
| Intense Violence | β | β | Matches |
| Nudity | β | β | Matches |
| Strong Sexual Content | β | β | Matches |
| Strong Language | β | β | Matches |
| Use of Drugs and Alcohol | β | β | Matches |
| Mature Humor | β | Reports differ | Listed by WikiGTAVI, not by Halo |
Version note: the GTA V column is from GTA V’s published ESRB rating. The GTA 6 column is replaced when the ESRB publishes.
What M means, and what ratings don’t cover
M 17+ is the ESRB’s rating for content aimed at adults, one step below Adults Only. A rating describes the game Rockstar made; it doesn’t vouch for anything outside it, which is why spending and communication settings (Section 6) matter as much as the age block.
How to block GTA 6 on PS5 with Family Management
Start with your child’s account, not the console. PS5 parental controls apply per child account inside Family Management.
Set the age level
π§ Try this:
- On the PS5, go to Settings β Family and Parental Controls β Family Management.
- Select your child, then Parental Controls.
- Choose a preset (Child, Early Teens or Late Teens), or customise it.
- Make sure the age level for PS5 games is below 17. Children can only start games rated at or below the level set.
You can make the same changes from the PlayStation Family app. Full details are in Sony’s PS5 parental controls and spending limits guide.
Cap spending and limit communication
On the same screen, set Monthly Spending Limit to 0. Set Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict.
β οΈ Watch out: If your child tries to start a blocked game, they can send you an exception request by notification and email. Approve it only if you mean to. Any adult you appoint as a guardian can also change the spending limit.
How to block GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S
On Xbox, restrictions start from the age you give for your child.
Using the Xbox Family Settings app
π§ Try this:
- Open the Xbox Family Settings app and select your child.
- Tap Content Restrictions and turn on Filter Inappropriate Content.
- Select Allow Content Suitable for Age and confirm your child’s age.
- To block GTA 6 specifically, block it by title. This works regardless of its rating.
On the console or family.microsoft.com
On the console, go to Settings β Privacy and online safety, select your child, then Content restrictions. A setting of 11 allows games up to E10+ but not T or M. The same restriction is available at family.microsoft.com and also applies on Windows. The ESRB’s Xbox parental controls walkthrough covers spending controls too.
In-game spending, GTA+ and online chat at launch
A rating block stops the game from launching. It doesn’t stop purchases made elsewhere.
Single-player at launch
Sony’s FAQ describes GTA VI as a single-player experience. The communication restrictions from Sections 4 and 5 still apply to every other game on the account.
Pre-order offers and subscriptions
PlayStation Store pre-orders include a GTA+ offer that rolls into a paid monthly subscription unless it is cancelled.
β οΈ Watch out: If a GTA 6 pre-order was placed on a family account, check for the GTA+ renewal. We keep the current dates and steps in our guide to cancelling the GTA+ trial that comes with a pre-order. What the subscription covers is tracked in what GTA+ includes after GTA 6 launches.
When a rating block may not work as expected
Three gaps cause most surprises. Close them before launch day.
Pre-loads while the rating is still pending
Neither Sony’s nor Microsoft’s parental-control documentation says how an age filter treats a game still marked Rating Pending. Don’t rely on the age level alone before release.
On Xbox, block GTA 6 by title. On PS5, keep the spending limit at 0 so a pre-order can’t be bought without you. Pre-load timing and refund limits are covered in our PS5 pre-load and refund rules.
Shared adult accounts and reversing a purchase
Controls apply per account, so a child using an adult’s profile isn’t filtered. Keep your own profile sign-in private. If a purchase already went through, here is how to cancel a GTA 6 pre-order and request a refund.
